89 and counting!

Today is my father-in-law’s 89th birthday; we’ve been celebrating all week-end.  We had 17 for dinner on Saturday and 15 on Sunday. Our daughter, son-in-law and adorable granddaughter Marisa drove down from Tracy, our son lives in Los Osos and his girlfriend were in attendance, my father-in-law’s lady-friend, our nieces from the Bay area, they each have one child and my brother-in-law, his wife and their two kids from Lancaster.  It was a house-full, with lots of cooking & eating but so much fun.

The house was warm and full of love and laughter.  My father-in-law relishes in all the attention and enjoys his birthday they have become a family holiday. They also give him bragging rights he can tell his friends how many parties he had. Today will be the second ‘party’, Friday is another with his Church ‘bunch’ and if he can work it out there will be one more.

Its funny when we are children birthdays are our personal holidays but as we get older they are not such a big deal.  I’m not sure if it’s because we don’t want all the attention or are we too busy to acknowledge another milestone.  Maybe as a Senior you begin to realize the importance of each day, to thank God you are alive, to tell someone you love them, to hug your kids/grandkids or a friend, to hold someone’s hand and let them know you care.  Maybe each birthday becomes a true celebration of life with the great expectations for tomorrow.

Dad is already planning his 90th birthday party at the Madonna Inn; so far we have reservations for 28.  RSVP’s will be accepted through mid January 2010.  J
